Chapter 3 – Important - the Leadership Bear

In her lovely book: “Bear snores on“, author Karma Wilson describes our friend the bear, asleep during his winter hibernation period. This time, a group of annoying critters invade the privacy of his cave and are using it for their personal needs. They prepare food, pop some popcorn, light a fire, dance and have an effervescent good time. Unknowingly they are depriving the bear of his much-needed winter sleep. When finally, accidentally, the bear is awoken, the small forest animals scurry away only to find the bear, instead of wholeheartedly devouring them, complaining that they did not share what they’ve cooked. In order to placate the bear, the animals prepare more food for him and when he is finished eating, he tells his guests a bear story, and they being tired after a night of debauchery, fall asleep. In this story the bear is displaying two situational leadership approaches: After being woken up, rather rudely, by the unwanted guests, the bear assesses his options. Realizing that the miniature scale of his uninvited guests would not provide sufficient nourishment, he moves to facilitating style from the coercive leadership style, he thus influences his friends to prepare more food for him so he can eat as well.

This chapter introduces the concept of situational leadership within the framework of active listening and empathy as a mean to acquire informal power.
